General Hylan B. Lyon of Eddyville was "the courthouse burnin'est general" in all the Confederate States of America. One of the first courthouses to go was the Trigg County courthouse at Cadiz, KY.

A Confederate Memorial and Civil War Veterans Monument is located in front of the courthouse in downtown Cadiz. Originally designed as a drinking fountain, it is one of only five utilitarian monuments in the state.
