The Knott County ATV Safety Training Center for ATV's and dirt bikes opened Spring 2007.
  • It is one of the only five training centers in the United States
  • It is the only center that includes a training center, a skills test course, as well as beginner, intermediate and challenge trails accessible right from the training center.

Directions to the ATV Safety Training Center & access to hundreds of miles of trails: Take Hwy 80 to
Hwy 1098 north 2 miles turning left onto Elk View Road, then right on Sutton Memorial Drive.

Knott County has established an OHV club for ATVers and dirt bikers. Several events are planned throughout the year. ATV TRAILS
ATV Sutton Trail #1
(Moderate Skill Level)

The trailhead for this 4-6 hour ride (50+ miles) starts at the ATV Training Center and is for the experienced ride. Less experienced riders can access the trail from Elk View Drive. Trail meanders through reclaimed coal mining areas, logging roads, forest area, along creek beds and past beaver dams. Almost guaranteed to see elk along this route.

ATV Fire Trail #2
(Moderate Skill Level)

Very scenic. Featuring the famous playground, deep mine still in operation, Camp Rock on cliff top, many breathtaking views and overlooks. Bring binoculars and cameras. Short walk to top of Snake Den featuring a high cliff overlooking a woodland valley. This not for the beginner - expect to get a bit muddy. (606) 785-4371 (trail not marked)

ATV Brushee Fork Trail #3
(Moderate Skill Level)

A bit more challenging than #1. Very scenic ride along wooded trails and creek riding. Definitely will be muddy but a lot of fun. Come see the natural rock cave and other scenic views. Almost always see elk along this trail. Great all day ride. Bring water/food. (606) 434-1281 (trail not marked)

ATV Red Fox Trail #4
(Easy Trail Ride)

Very scenic. See the Split Rocks, bat cave, historic Orphans Home, beautiful scenery and winding trails through woodlands and open fields. Great places to stop and explore. Fun, easy ride for everyone. Perfect for family ride - kids, wives, doubles, etc.

  • The Knott County ATV Trail Riders will take advantage of the growing number of ATV's. Nationwide sales have jumped from 436,000 to 797,000 during a five year period from 1998 - 2002. Kentucky ranks in the top 15 states in terms of ATV sales with annual sales of over 20,000 units.
  • The Knott County ATV trails have the potential to generate substantial economic impacts.
    • In Wisconsin, 62% of the ATVs travel spend at least one night away from home on their outings, staying in motels, campgrounds, cabins and with friends.
    • In Minnesota, 51% of ATV outings lasted two or more days.
    • These ATVers spend money at motels, campgrounds, grocery stores, restaurants and general retail and service outlets.
  • The Knott County ATV trails have a large regional market to draw on.
    • In Minnesota, 28% of ATV outings involved a trip of 50 to 100 miles; 33% involved a trip of more than 100 miles
    • For Knott County, the population within 50 miles is 472,000; the population within 100 miles is 2.6 million.
  • A well conceived trail system will be very attractive to ATVers.
    • A Knott County location offers excellent regional access.
    • The trail will respond to key user needs; variety of scenery, maps and signage, connections to other ATV trails and riding areas, well maintained trails, access to fuel and a variety of technical challenges.
  • The popularity of the ATV trails in Harlan County and of the Hatfield McCoy Trail in West Virginia demonstrates to the potential of an ATV trail in Knott County.
